Next Meeting: at the Overlake Round Table Pizza Restaurant Tuesday, May 26th, 7:00pm
April Meeting: With Summer-run Season just around the corner we will a presentation/discussion on how and where to find these sleek torpedoes.
Cast For Kids: Thanks go to Jim Grimes for coordinating with the Cast For Kids Foundation for the event May 16th at Seward Park in Seattle. The weather was beautiful and the fish were biting. The only problem was they were using large barbless hooks, which led to a lot of worm larceny by the trout. Most of the fish were good sized and fat. There were a few smaller in the 8- to 10-inch range, but they probably had a hard time getting the hooks into their mouths. Four club members and a friend joined 12 other volunteers to help 423 kids catch fish. Most left with their two fish limit.
Winter Steelhead Contest: The Winter Steelhead contest is over. If you caught any Steelhead before the end of April, be sure to give Jim Grimes the information of your successes on the rivers. The person with the largest Steelhead of the season will get the coveted perpetual trophy plaque to display for the following year. All participants will be eligible for the drawing for a fine fishing rod. Awards will be presented at the Summer Picnic in July.
Sturgeon Trip: Deposits are in an have been forwarded to the charter company. Don Oster has booked the “Northern” out of Ilwaco’s Pacific Charters for Friday and Saturday, June 12th and 13th. The boat will hold sixteen. The time and tides should be favorable for and excited couple of days of sturgeon fishing. Be sure to sign-up with Don before all the space is gone. Although we do have a “full’ boat, there are two spots may be added for each day. Don might also entertain a standby list.
Lead Pouring Party: (POSTPONED – there is a conflict original date) John Dunkel has volunteered to provide lead for club members to pour anchors and weights. He would like to make this a social event rather than just a convenience to the members. It was suggested that since this should be an outdoor activity, we could have a bar-be-cue. We can again discuss about when and where at the meeting.
July Picnic: Ernie Anderson has secured the Red Barn at McDonald’s Park in Carnation for our regular July meeting date, the 28th. We will be working out the details over the next few months. As in the past we will divvy the potluck assignment based on the members last names; those with last names starting with A thru G will bring cold dishes and those with names H thru Z will bring hot dishes. Be sure to start planning what to bring for the “dessert” auction. Be creative; choices are not limited to pies and cakes.
Tib Bits: Remember, the WDFW has changed the rules on us again. With the exception of the streams that were open in May, most rivers in Washington now open on the First Saturday in June (June 5th this year). A quick look at the regs for Western Washington, the only rivers I saw that kept the June 1st opener were the Skykomish (below the Forks), Cascade, and Skagit rivers and Skomokawa Creek. There also are several rivers that have later dates. Be sure to check the regs before you go out this summer.
