March 2009 Newsletter
Next Meeting: at the Overlake Round Table Pizza Restaurant Tuesday, March 24th, 7:00pm
DUES: Dues are due. Come early, bring your checkbook (or cash), and get your membership updated before the meeting. This will be the last month that the newsletter will be delivered to those who do not renew their membership.
February Meeting: Jim Grimes shared his knowledge of the Forks area rivers. He included everything one would need for a fine trip to Forks, including where, when, and how.
Forks Outing: The weather started off great, but by Saturday snow and hail showers pelted us for a good part of the day. By Sunday the roads were sheets of ice. Jim Grimes, former member Greg Burnham, Tom Nordin, his friend Carl Haslam, Roger Anderson, Harry Dahlner, Norrie Johnson, George Craig, and his son-in-law spent one to four days on the rivers around Forks. Fishing was great. Catching left a little to be desired. All in all, the troop went 10 for 16 out of over 20 man-days. Not bad until you take Jim’s numbers out. Jim definitely knows the Forks area and knocked the socks off the rest of the group, including one monster buck that would have tipped the scales near 20-pounds.
March Meeting Program: Ernie Anderson and Rick Michael will give us the scoop on Springer fishing on the Columbia River. This will be another where, when, and how to fish for these prize fish. They will discuss both boat fishing and bank fishing. The season below Bonneville will be fairly short this year; so don’t hesitate to block out some time on your schedule.
March/April Springer Outing: With several members heading down to the Columbia we can discuss the possibility coordinating a pre- and/or post- get together. There may be space to team up with other members or share gas expenses. More on this at the meeting. Cast For Kids: Jim Grimes has coordinated with the Cast For Kids Foundation for May 16th at Seward Park in Seattle. So far five club members have signed up. Jim will fill in the details at the meeting. Winter Steelhead Contest: Keep Grimes posted on your successes on the rivers through the end of April. The person with the largest Steelhead of the season will get the perpetual trophy plaque to display for the following year. All participants will be eligible for the drawing for a fine fishing rod. Awards will be presented at the Summer Picnic in July.
Sturgeon Trip: Don Oster has booked the “Northern” out of Ilwaco’s Pacific Charters for Friday and Saturday, June 12th and 13th. The boat will hold sixteen. The time and tides should be favorable for and excited couple of days of sturgeon fishing. Be sure to sign-up with Don before all the space is gone.
Lead Pouring Party: John Dunkel has volunteered to provide lead for club members to pour anchors and weights. He would like to make this a social event rather than just a convenience to the members. It was suggested that since this should be an outdoor activity, we could have a bar-be-cue. We can discuss about when and where at the meeting.
July Picnic: Ernie Anderson has secured the Red Barn at McDonald’s Park in Carnation for our regular July meeting date, the 28th. We will be working out the details over the next few months.
